Art Factory in Barcelona

Metàfora is an independent, multidisciplinary art school in Barcelona.
Our flexible Studio Arts Program is designed in 6-week blocks starting several times a year.
You can join the course for a few weeks up to 2 years.
Our student groups range from recent high school graduates to adult professionals with a university education.
All classes are taught in English.

Each student is given a personal studio space within our old factory complex in the heart of Barcelona. Students combine their studies with classes, tutorials and individual studio work.

The program is very hands-on the materials, and contains a wide range of classes with different tools and techniques. These include clay sculpting, welding, screen printing, installation, performance, life drawing, among many others.

Our faculty is composed of accomplished, practicing artists who regularly exhibit their work both locally and on the international stage.

The students at Metàfora are encouraged to get out and about the art world of Barcelona This means that they constantly meet gallerists, curators and other cultural managers. Our art students also have the possibility to show work in several art gallery exhibitions around the city each semester.

At Metàfora’s Studio Arts Programs
we teach both
traditional and experimental classes

Year 1:
Foundation Program

The first year contains Metàfora’s Foundation Program and is designed for students who approach full-time art studies for the first time.
Here, the focus is on experimentation and trying new materials and techniques, testing the creative potential of each student. The tools and techniques workshops are optional, and when not in class, students work independently in their studio spaces.

This level does not require previous art studies or a portfolio, and as a student you do not need to have a ddefined artistic discourse.
It is also not necesssary to have previous knowledge of contemporary art history.

Year 2:
Certificate in Studio Arts

The second year is Metàfora’s Certificate in Studio Arts is for students who have spent at least on year in full-time art studies. 

In this stage of the studio arts program, you’ll continue shaping the artistic discourse you first began exploring in your initial year. The course is for students who are interested in a career as practicing artists, and we focus on how to profesionalize your art production and introduce you to curators and gallerists. The focus is on individual production, exhibition activity and critical thinking.

If you already have full-time art studies behind you, you can join this level with a portfolio.

Flexible Studio Arts Program

Long term:
2 Years + graduation trimester or 1 year

The Metàfora Studio Arts complete course is two years + a 3 month graduation period. Metàfora strongly recommends the full option, as it’s where students experience the most artistic growth.

For some students, this plan is not possible, and the semester or one-year option is viable way of experiencing the school, the city and everything they both have to offer. Signing up for one year always carries the possibility of continuing into the following level.

Short term:
Studio Blocks (6 weeks)

Organize your stay in Blocks.
Metàfora is a flexible, modular course that can be organized in blocks.

Students sometimes decide to stay for 1 block, and towards the end of their stay, decide if they would like to continue. Students who decide to stay on the course, can keep their studio space and continue, or change, their tutor (subject to available places).
