BLOCK 6: The Art Program and the Catalan Summer

The last block of the Academic Year coincides with the Barcelona Summer and ends with the biggest Open Studios exhibition of the year which will be designed and carried out by Gisela Chillida, a prominent young curator, writer and art critic and which will be spread around the school’s grounds and spaces.

Below is an overview of the classes offered during Block 6, 2021-22.
The classes are supplemented by Tutorials, Paint and Sculpture Lab (technical consultations), Presentations and Discourse Reviews, amongst other activities.

Scheduled classes for Block 6

During every Block we offer an assortment of practical workshops from which students learn how to incorporate a variety of tools and artistic techniques in their work.

Gold leaf, tempera and acrylics on wood (Piotr Perski)
Working with gold leaf in painting has a long historical tradition and exceptional spiritual meaning. In this class Piotr explores classical techniques of working with tempera and acrylics and introduces the gesso wood preparation and the way to execute and work with gold surface in small scale portrait and ornamental abstract painting. Students are encouraged to learn about the meaning of the symbols and to play with paints to create decorative geometric or biological pattern structures.

Questions of Volume (Oriol Texidor)
This sculpture class is dedicated to different one-day technical investigation workshops in which students approach the sculpture media within a more conceptual territory. A new theme will be proposed and a corresponding studio assignment will be given at the end of each class, allowing the students the time to think about and further develop the technique during the week.

One-day workshops (visiting teachers)
Cyanotype is an early photographic technique, invented in 1842 that creates images through the use of sunlight. It is still used and loved today because it’s easy, ecofriendly, analog in nature.
Embroidery in contemporary art opens up a new textile channel for artists to communicate with. Through the use of narrative, students embrace embroidery often applying it to their personal art practice.

Life Drawing classes (Piotr Perski)
The life drawing classes are “the basics” for understanding model drawing: construction of the body, anatomy, composition, body expression. Students will also develop a series of drawings as art project, and Piotr divides all classes in small blocks to present different techniques and exercises. The program can change depends of the dynamic and necessity of the group. Over the academic year this class is a weekly ongoing event, and Piotr makes the most of this different dynamics to help students to develop their own expression and language in drawing.

Every week the art students are exposed to different currents in Recent Art History. This class is obligatory for students on the Foundation program and open to all interested students. It is necessary to have passed this class to access the 2nd year of Metàfora’s Training Program. These lectures are aimed at encouraging students to build a personal discourse informed by what is happening in Contemporary Art.

The block 6 of RAH, which will unfold in two sessions, is designed to introduce you to those artistic practices surrounding the expanded notion of “environment” and site-specific art practices, with a special focus on environmental thought with an overview of how it has transformed across time.

We will be exploring concepts related to the “geological turn”, as well as those practices that situate the discussion at the intersection of environmental and cultural discourses and those related to anthropocentric concerns which address worlds that go beyond the human.

Finally, we will focus on present-day artistic practices that have critically expanded these ideas towards a more circular and “sustainable” way of thinking at the intersection between the natural and the built environment, sciences, economics, and art-making.

This workshop is designed to nudge our Intermediate and Advanced level students out of their comfort zone and work with materials and reflection processes which they do not usually engage in. The workshops range from “The Materials I work with, the Ideas I investigate” to “Contemporary painting, even for those who do not paint” and are meant for pick at the students’ discourse and investigation into – perhaps – unknown territory. The class is obligatory to all 2nd and 3rd year students. If space is available, students from the Foundation Program can attend.

This weekly debate group is designed for students on 2nd and 3rd year of the course. The contents of this space varies from block to block, sometimes it is more theoretical, other times more practical. Readings are usually recommended by the teacher. The class is obligatory to all 2nd and 3rd year students.

The importance of when and where (Arash Fayez) On site specific art.

This class is an organic follow up to the first year of Recent Art History. These weekly sessions are dedicated to transcendental areas and include recent critical theory in visual arts, such as Aesthetics, Postcolonial Theory, Queer perspectives, Feminist and post-feminist thought, Semiotics in Visual Art, and Psychoanalysis & the Subject. The class is obligatory to all 2nd and 3rd year students.

Postcolonial Theory
