The 3-Year Art Program at Metàfora
The Studio Arts Program contains both practical workshops available to students on all levels, and a set of theoretical classes designed for each year of the program.
Another great characteristic of the course is that each art student has a studio space on campus and a personal tutor who will accompany them during their stay on the course and with whom they talk on a weekly basis about their artwork and progress.
Together, these different components aim at equipping Metàfora’s artists with strong tools – both technical and intellectual – enabling them to form part of the world of Contemporary Art today.
Metàfora is an independent institution, but our Studio Arts Program can be compared to the 3 years of a BA or BFA university structure. The program operates on 3 different levels , and students are admitted according to their previous experience.
Each level carries it own certification:
Level 1: Foundation Program in Studio Arts
Level 2: Certificate in Studio Arts
Level 3: Diploma in Studio arts
Short Term Stays
Not everybody has the possibility ‘to tear out an entire year of the calendar and fly off to Spain’. We understand that.
Therefore, we offer the possibility of shorter stays on Metàfora’s Studio Arts Programs: where one block last just 6 weeks. This option is a more affordable, yet intense and a concentrated way of savoring the course. Overseas students on short stays do not need to apply for a student visa, and can use a 3 month tourist visa instead.
Students on a short stay enter the course alongside all other students and participate in all activities like everyone else. If there is an open call for an off-campus exhibition coinciding with the stay, the short term students are also welcome to apply.
Short term students must pay a small fee towards the trip to Madrid, if their stay coincides with Block 3 or 4. Have a look here to see more information about the trip.
Upcoming Short Term Stay:
Block 2
18th of October to 25th of November 2022
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS | Metàfora admits students to the short stays throughout the year, whenever places are available.
Entry requirements for each level are described above. |
LENGHT OF COURSE | Studio blocks of 6 weeks
A short term stay can be prolonged, subject to available places. |
ECTS | 12 ECTS per block*
* Metàfora is an independent institution without university affiliation. |
EVALUATION | Students on short stays are evaluated just like other students and recieve a detailed transcript upon completion. |
Summer Block
The Summer Block is the shortest of all the blocks of Metàfora’s Studio Arts Program and is a celebration of the wonderful Mediterranean summer.
The Summer Block has a more playful structure, and falls outside the curriculum of the academic year. Therefore there is no division between levels, even though tutorial groups and other activities are divided according to the previous experience and training of the participants.
The Summer Block is organized around longer (optional) school days. The course is more varied and flexible, with different classes every week, and the possibility to opt for even shorter stays: from 1 to 4 weeks.
The general structure of the Summer Block, maintains the weekly tutorials and Recent Art history classes and ends with intensive days of art work presentations.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS | Metàfora admits students to the Summer Block in groups with different backgrounds and levels.
Therefore it is not necessary to present a portfolio, but such is very appreciated during the admission process. |
LENGHT OF COURSE | 4 weeks (in July)
Students can join weeks 1, 2 and 3 independently. |
ECTS | 8 ECTS*
* Metàfora is an independent institution without university affiliation. |
EVALUATION | On Metàfora’s Summer Block there is no formal evaluation of the student’s work, beyond the necessary attendance rate for the obligatory activities on the course (tutorials, Recent Art History, final work presentations etc.). |
Part Time Option
It is possible to enroll on Metàfora’s Studio Arts Programs in a part time format.
On the part time option, the 12 ECTs credits of a habitual studio block will be obtained over two studio blocks.
Students on this option have no studio space at Metàfora, but can store materials and work in progress in a designated area. Outside class hours, the part time students can work on personal art projects in classrooms, when available. A part time student will not be allowed to install permanent workstations anywhere at school.
The part time option contemplates an average of 18 hours per week, 11 of which are direct class activity and approx. 7 is consultation and individual work. A part time students admission does not qualify for a student visa, which is available only for studies over 22 hours per week.
It is mandatory for a part time student to sign up for two blocks at a time and follow the established structure:
1 of 2 part time blocks
During the first block, the part time student will focus mostly on learning techniques and experimenting with new tools and materials.
The student will have access to 4 weekly classes:
- Recent Art History / Critical Theory (in person class, or recorded)*
- Choice of 2 of the weekly Tools & Techniques classes offered each block: afternoon classes (or morning classes, subject to available places)
- Choice of 1 of the weekly drawing classes offered each block (life drawing or drawing)
- Technical consultations in Paint Lab and Sculpture Lab (see here)
*These classes are mandatory for the student to gain credit towards a pass to the following level on the course.
Optional in the first part time block:
Sit-in on the Presentations / Discourse reviews at the end of the block.
2 of 2 part time blocks
During the second of the two consecutive blocks, the part time student work work on producing a finished piece to be presented at the discourse reviews at the end of the block.
During this block, like full time students, the part time student will have occasional access to booking “project rooms” for a small period of time.
The student will have access to 4 weekly classes:
- Weekly “Thinking and Making” -workshop (specific to the level on which the student has been admitted)*
- Weekly tutorial with a designated in-house-tutor*
- Choice of 1 of the Tools & Techniques classes offered each block
- Choice of 1 of the drawing classes offered each block (life drawing or drawing)
- Participation in Presentations / Discourse Reviews at the end of the block.*
- Technical consultations in Paint Lab and Sculpture Lab (see here)
*These classes are mandatory for the student to gain credit towards a pass to the following level on the course.
Optional in the second part time block:
Recent Art History / Critical Theory (recorded)
The part time option can be taken as an entirely vocational art course, but it can also be a way to complete the credits for obtaining the different certificates of Metàfora’s Studio Arts Programs in a different pace.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS | Metàfora admits students to the part time option throughout the year, whenever places are available.
Entry requirements for each level are described here. |
LENGHT OF COURSE | Two studio blocks of 6 weeks (6 ECTs) parttime corresponds to one studio block full time (12 ECTS)
